Aneeqa Bashir, a dedicated seventeen-year-old student from Karachi American School, has achieved a significant milestone in her relentless efforts to promote a greener Pakistan. Thanks to her determination and love for nature, the banyan trees lining Amir Khusro Road in Karachi have been officially recognized and protected as national heritage by the government.<\/p>\n

To accomplish the challenging task of preserving these trees as national heritage, Aneeqa sought guidance from Marvi Mazhar, an individual with successful experience in securing heritage declarations for trees on Shahrah-i-Iran and Hatim Alvi Road. With Ms. Mazhar’s invaluable advice, Aneeqa approached Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, who shared her passion for environmental conservation.<\/p>\n

The mayor, recognizing the importance of preserving the city’s green heritage, took prompt action upon Aneeqa’s request and officially declared the banyan trees in Amir Khusro area as protected site under a green heritage status through an administrative order. This aligns perfectly with Mayor Wahab’s vision for a greener and more sustainable Karachi, a vision strongly supported by Aneeqa. The historical significance of these trees, having once provided shade to merchants along Amir Khusro Road, adds cultural value to their protection.<\/p>\n

With her determination undeterred, Aneeqa now directs her focus towards saving the old banyan trees at Karachi Zoo and aims to raise awareness among the public about the importance of preserving trees for maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance.<\/p>\n

Aneeqa’s next ambitious initiative is the ‘Youth Environmental Responsibility Act,’ which proposes that every student should plant a tree as a prerequisite for graduation. This strategic approach aims to promote sustainable practices, create agroforestry zones, and preserve regional indigenous trees, ensuring the conservation of vital ecosystems and resilient environments.<\/p>\n

“In spite of Pakistan playing a minor role in global emissions, it is among the most vulnerable to climate change. As a climate-vulnerable country, the next generation must be included in the environmental discourse for developing long-term resilience mechanisms,” Aneeqa emphasized passionately.<\/p>\n

The successful collaboration between proactive citizens like Aneeqa and the government highlights the pivotal role of trees in shaping Pakistan’s future and fostering a greener, more responsible nation.
