We asked 50 people to describe what a “wholesome lifestyle” is, and we received 50 different answers. For someone it may mean walking five miles in a week, avoiding fast food on weekdays, or spending time with loved ones every other day. For someone else, it may be running a marathon twice every year, following a diet regiment, or avoiding addictive substances. Neither of these is better than the other. You get to decide what your lifestyle looks like. However, experts suggest the following habits to help you achieve wellness.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Your diet plays a crucial role in your overall health. Aim to consume a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Avoiding processed foods, sugars, and excessive caffeine can lead to significant health benefits. Everything in moderation is the key!

Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is vital for all bodily functions. Aim to drink at least 8 cups (64 ounces) of water daily. If plain water isn’t appealing, try infusing it with natural flavors like cucumber or lemon. Always keep a water bottle with you to help track your daily intake.

Break Bad Habits

Addressing bad habits is crucial for a healthier lifestyle. They may include excessive screen time, excessive caffeine intake, smoking. Excessive screen time can contribute to eye strain, poor posture, and mental health issues. Setting boundaries for screen use can help mitigate these effects. For caffeine or cigarette users, who are unable to kick the habit to the curb, transitioning to less harmful alternatives like herbal or green tea, oral nicotine pouches, Heated Tobacco Products (HTPs) or vapes can reduce the harm considerably.

Get Moving

As Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper, the “father of aerobics,” put it, “Exercise is the best preventive medicine.” Starting out, if you’re new to exercise, begin with low-impact activities such as walking or swimming, gradually increase the intensity and duration as your fitness improves. You can incorporate a mix of cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. At the very least, take a 5-minute stroll and stretch every couple of hours if you live a sedentary lifestyle.

Prioritize Sleep

Quality sleep is as important as diet and exercise. Strive for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to rejuvenate your body and mind. Create a restful sleeping environment by keeping your room dark, cool, and quiet. Establish a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends.

Maintaining positive relationships is essential for emotional health. Spend quality time with family and friends while engaging in meaningful conversations. Schedule regular meetups or calls with loved ones to maintain strong connections. Participate in community activities or clubs to meet new people and expand your social network.
