With a global education, a passion for medicine, and a heart rooted in creativity and compassion, Mishel Kaleem is embracing the future with confidence and purpose. A graduate of Leysin American School in Switzerland, her journey has been shaped by academic excellence, international experiences, and a deep desire to make a difference in the lives of others. As she prepares to take the next step toward a career in healthcare, Good Times Magazine invites you to discover the story behind a young woman whose aspirations are as inspiring as the path she has already travelled.

Congratulations on graduating from Leysin American School! Looking back, what has this journey taught you about yourself beyond academics?

Thank you so much. My years at Leysin American School taught me far more than what could ever be measured by grades or an IB diploma. Living away from home at a boarding school in Switzerland meant learning independence at a relatively young age. I had to learn how to manage my time, make decisions, adapt to challenges and, most importantly, understand myself.

The International Baccalaureate was certainly demanding, but I think some of my most valuable lessons came from the people around me. I studied alongside students from many different countries, cultures and backgrounds. It taught me to listen before forming an opinion and to appreciate that everyone carries a story you may know nothing about.

I also learned that I am more resilient than I once thought. There were difficult days and moments when things did not go exactly as planned, but those experiences helped me grow. I left Leysin with greater humility, independence and gratitude, and I think those qualities are just as important as academic achievement.

You’ve studied in Switzerland, attended Harvard Medical School’s summer program, and now have offers from prestigious universities. Which experience has transformed your perspective on your future the most, and why?

I feel extremely fortunate Alhumdulliah to have had these opportunities, and I try not to take any of them for granted. Studying in Switzerland gave me a global perspective, but attending a summer programme at Harvard Medical School was particularly meaningful because it brought me closer to the world of medicine.

Being in an environment centred around medicine and learning made the dream feel more real. It helped me understand that medicine is not simply about being academically strong. It requires curiosity, discipline, empathy and a willingness to continue learning throughout your entire life.

Receiving offers from the University of Toronto, Queen’s University and the Royal College of Surgeons has been incredibly humbling. Each opportunity represents years of support from my teachers, family and the people who believed in me. Harvard helped confirm my interest in medicine, but my international education has taught me the kind of person I hope to become while pursuing it.

Medicine is one of the most demanding career paths. What first inspired you to dream of becoming a doctor, and what kind of impact do you hope to make through your work?

My interest in medicine developed from a genuine curiosity about the human body and a desire to understand how science can directly improve someone’s life. Over time, however, I began to realise that medicine is as much about people as it is about science.

A patient may not remember every medical term used during an appointment, but they will often remember whether they felt heard, respected and cared for. That human side of medicine is very important to me.

I am still at the beginning of my journey, so I say this with a great deal of humility: I have so much to learn. My hope is to become a doctor who combines scientific knowledge with compassion. If, one day, I can make a frightened patient feel safer, help a family understand a difficult situation, or contribute to improving healthcare in underserved communities, I would consider that incredibly meaningful.

Growing up in a globally connected family has exposed you to different cultures and ways of thinking. How has this international upbringing shaped your personality and worldview?

I was born and raised in a Canadian family based in Vaughan, Toronto, but our lives and experiences have always been internationally connected as my grandparents live in Pakistan where I feel deeply connected . I have also had the privilege of studying in Switzerland and travelling and meeting people from many parts of the world.

My father works internationally as a Vice President at Aramco Digital in Saudia Arabia and my mother manages businesses across Canada and Dubai. Watching both of my parents work across different cultures and environments taught me adaptability and the importance of respecting people from all walks of life.

At Leysin, I lived and studied with students whose languages, traditions and perspectives were sometimes completely different from mine. It made me realise how small our individual world can become if we only surround ourselves with people who think exactly like us.

I think my upbringing has made me curious about people. I try to ask questions, listen and remain open-minded. The world is incredibly diverse, and I see that diversity as something to learn from rather than something that divides us.

Your family has a remarkable legacy in entrepreneurship, leadership, and education. What values have you inherited from your parents and grandparents that you carry with you every day?

I am very grateful for my family, but what inspires me most is not simply what they have achieved; it is the work and perseverance behind those achievements.

My grandfather, Chaudhry Saleem Ullah, was a pioneer in contributing to the building and development of Islamabad. My grandmother, Naz Malik, has successfully run a housing project. From them, I have learned courage, vision and the importance of creating something that can serve future generations.

My father studied at the University of Toronto and has built his career in technology and leadership, while my mother studied at York University and has developed businesses across Canada and Dubai. My parents have always taught me that opportunities come with responsibility. They remind me to remain grounded, work hard and never believe that any achievement makes you more important than another person.

At home, I am also simply an older sister to Musa and Essa, and a very devoted member of our family Pablo, our dog, certainly keeps all of us humble! [laughs]

The values I hope to carry with me are resilience, kindness, discipline and humility. I have learned from my family that leadership should never only be about personal success; it should also be about what you contribute to others.

Alongside science, you’ve nurtured a creative side through art and writing, with your artwork even being exhibited at the Royal Ontario Museum. How do creativity and medicine complement each other in your life?

Art and writing have always given me a different way to understand emotions and people. I was incredibly grateful to have my artwork exhibited at the Royal Ontario Museum Toronto .For me, it was a very special experience, not simply because my work was displayed, but because art is such a personal form of communication.

I have also enjoyed writing stories and contributing to local libraries. Writing encourages you to imagine life from another person’s perspective. You have to think about how someone feels, what motivates them and what they may be experiencing internally.

I believe there is a connection between that and medicine. Medicine requires scientific precision, but a doctor is caring for a human being with fears, relationships and a life beyond their symptoms. Creativity encourages observation and empathy.

Science teaches me to ask, “What is happening?”Art and writing often encourage me to ask, “What might this person be feeling?” I hope I never lose either side of myself.

You’ve balanced a rigorous International Baccalaureate programme while pursuing extracurricular passions. What advice would you give students who struggle to balance academics with their personal interests?

I would first say that I am definitely not someone who managed everything perfectly! There were days when I felt organised and productive, and there were also days when my plans completely fell apart.

The IB taught me that balance does not always mean giving equal time to everything every single day. Sometimes academics require more attention, and at other times you need space for yourself, your creativity or the people you love.

My advice would be to avoid comparing your routine with someone else’s. What works for one student may not work for another. Break large tasks into smaller ones, ask for help before you become completely overwhelmed and protect at least a little time for something that genuinely makes you happy.

I also believe rest should not be treated as a reward you only deserve after exhaustion. We are human beings before we are students. Looking after yourself allows you to return to your goals with greater clarity.

Success often comes with moments of self-doubt. Was there ever a time when you questioned yourself, and how did you overcome it?

Absolutely. I think it would be unrealistic for me to pretend that I have never doubted myself.

There were moments during the IB when I questioned whether I was capable of reaching the goals I had set for myself. Studying away from home can also feel lonely at times, even when you are surrounded by wonderful people. I have had moments when I felt tired, overwhelmed or afraid that one difficult period might define my entire future.

I learned not to make permanent conclusions about myself based on a difficult day or a difficult season. I also learned to accept support. My family has been an enormous source of encouragement, and I have been fortunate to have teachers and people around me who reminded me to look at the bigger picture.

I still experience self-doubt. I simply understand it differently now. Doubt does not always mean you should stop; sometimes it means you care deeply about what you are trying to achieve. I try to acknowledge the feeling, learn from it and continue moving forward one step at a time.

You describe yourself as someone who enjoys giving back through libraries, storytelling, and community involvement. Why do you believe community service is important for young people today?

I believe community service reminds us that our lives are connected to the lives of others. It is very easy, especially as students, to become completely focused on grades, university applications and our own future. Giving back encourages us to look beyond ourselves.

My involvement with libraries and storytelling has been particularly meaningful because books can give a young person confidence, imagination and sometimes even a sense of belonging. Something that feels like a small contribution to you may have a much greater meaning to someone else.

I also think young people should understand that community service is not about building an impressive résumé. If that is the only motivation, we miss the point. Service should begin with listening to what a community actually needs.

You do not need to create a huge organisation to make a difference. You can give your time, share a skill, help one child enjoy reading or consistently support an existing community initiative. Small acts, when they are sincere and sustained, matter.

If you could speak to your 13-year-old self today, what would you tell her about chasing big dreams without being overwhelmed?

I would tell her, “You don’t have to have your entire life figured out yet.”

At thirteen, big dreams can sometimes become frightening because you begin looking at the distance between where you are and where you hope to be. I would tell my younger self to stop trying to climb the entire staircase in one day.

Study for the next test. Read the next book. Ask the next question. Be kind to the person in front of you. Take the next opportunity that genuinely interests you.

I would also tell her that plans can change, and that does not always mean you have failed. Growth sometimes changes the way you see your future.

Most importantly, I would tell her to enjoy being young. Dreams are important, but so are family dinners, laughing with your brothers, creating art, writing stories and spending time with the people you love. Life should not begin only after you achieve something.

What does success truly mean to you at this stage of your life? Is it achievements, purpose, happiness—or something entirely different?

My definition of success is still evolving.

Of course, I am grateful for academic opportunities and university offers. They are meaningful to me because I know how much work and support went into reaching this stage.

At this stage of my life, I think success means becoming a person who uses her opportunities with purpose. I want to continue learning, remain close to my family and build a life in which I can be useful to others.

Perhaps success is a combination of purpose, happiness and inner peace. It is being ambitious without losing your kindness. It is achieving something and still remembering the people who helped you get there.

I am only at the beginning of my journey, so I certainly do not have a perfect definition yet. I hope that, years from now, I will measure my success not only by what I accomplished, but also by how I treated people along the way.

Finally, what message would you like to leave for young people around the world who dream of making a difference but don’t know where to begin?

Begin where you are, with what you have.

I think we sometimes see extraordinary people and extraordinary achievements and assume that making a difference must begin with a huge idea. But almost every meaningful journey begins quietly with curiosity, one decision or a willingness to help.

Read about the subject that interests you. Volunteer in your local community. Ask someone experienced for guidance. Write your idea down. Apply for the opportunity even if you are nervous. Allow yourself to be a beginner.

You also do not need to know exactly who you will become. I am still learning that myself.

Dream big, but remain humble enough to learn. Be ambitious, but be kind. And remember that making a difference does not always mean changing the entire world. Sometimes, positively changing one person’s world is a beautiful place to begin.

Rapid Fire
Fun Round
Three words your friends would use to describe you?

Curious, compassionate and determined.Although my close friends might add slightly perfectionistic! [laughs]

Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate while studying?

Hot chocolate especially after living in Switzerland!

A book, movie, or person that has inspired you the most?

My family collectively inspires me the most. I have been fortunate to grow up around people who have built

their lives through education, resilience and hard work. I take different lessons from my parents and grandparents, and I hope to carry the best of those lessons into my own journey.

If you weren’t pursuing medicine, what career would you choose?

Probably something involving writing, art or scientific research. I have always loved storytelling and creativity, so perhaps I would find a way to combine science with communication.

One destination in the world that’s still on your travel bucket list?

Japan. I would love to experience the culture, art and history and, of course, the food!

As the Islamic New Year begins with the arrival of Muharram, Muslims across the world enter a month steeped in history, spirituality, and remembrance. Yet, despite its profound significance, Muharram is often viewed through a narrow lens, reduced to sectarian narratives or perceived as a period relevant only to a particular school of thought. In reality, Muharram belongs to the entire Muslim Ummah, and the lessons of Karbala transcend labels, sects, and divisions.

The tragedy of Karbala is one of the most defining moments in Islamic history. It is a story of courage in the face of oppression, of unwavering faith amidst unimaginable hardship, and of standing firm for truth regardless of the cost. Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), did not rise for power, politics, or personal gain. His sacrifice was rooted in preserving the values of justice, dignity, integrity, and righteousness.

Unfortunately, discussions surrounding Muharram often become overshadowed by debates that focus on differences rather than shared values. The month is not an opportunity to highlight Shia-Sunni disputes, nor should it become a platform for division. Instead, it should encourage Muslims to revisit the universal principles that Karbala represents; principles that resonate with every believer regardless of sectarian identity.

The legacy of Imam Hussain (RA) teaches us that silence in the face of injustice is not an option. It reminds us that truth requires courage, that faith demands conviction, and that moral integrity must never be compromised for worldly interests. These lessons are as relevant today as they were over thirteen centuries ago.

Muharram also invites introspection. It encourages us to ask ourselves difficult questions: Do we stand for what is right when it is inconvenient? Do we uphold justice even when it challenges our comfort? Do we embody the values we admire in the heroes of Islamic history? Karbala is not merely an event to be remembered; it is a message to be lived.

For younger generations in particular, Muharram presents an opportunity to learn. Beyond headlines, rituals, and public discourse lies a rich history that deserves thoughtful study. Understanding the events of Karbala allows us to appreciate the immense sacrifices made to preserve the ethical foundations of Islam. It also fosters empathy, unity, and a deeper connection to our shared heritage.

Rooted in softness, nostalgia, and effortless elegance, BLOOM Lawn ’26 by Saira Shakira unfolds like a quiet summer dream. With airy fabrics, delicate embroideries, and a palette inspired by fading florals and sunlit memories, the collection beautifully captures the modern woman’s desire for both comfort and sophistication. In this conversation with Good Times Magazine, Saira Faisal and Shakira Usman talk about friendship, creative balance, storytelling in fashion, and the inspiration behind their latest collection.

You both started as friends and creative partners. How would you describe the dynamic between Saira and Shakira behind the brand today?

Our dynamic today is still rooted in the same foundation that started everything: trust, shared creativity, and genuine friendship.

What makes our partnership interesting is that it has evolved beyond just “best friends building a brand.” We have learned to balance emotional connection with the discipline of running a business together.

I am usually the more grounded strategist, while Saira brings a more expressive and instinctive creative energy. That contrast has worked in our favour because we fill different gaps.

Your upcoming BLOOM Lawn ’26 collection feels dreamy, soft, and nostalgic. What was the very first visual or emotion that inspired this collection?

The very first feeling behind BLOOM Lawn ’26 was nostalgia. It was inspired by soft, fleeting memories of slow summer afternoons, fresh flowers drying by the window, and fabrics that feel personal and lived in.

Visually, we were inspired by faded garden tones, sunlight filtering through curtains, and the romantic softness of vintage florals. Before sketches or prints even existed, we wanted the collection to capture an emotion: gentleness. Something calm, feminine, and quietly expressive rather than overly loud or trend driven.

Lawn season in Pakistan is extremely competitive. How do you make sure every Saira Shakira collection still feels distinct and instantly recognizable?

In a market as fast moving and competitive as Pakistan’s lawn industry, we have learned that staying distinct is less about following trends and more about staying consistent with our identity. For us, every Saira Shakira collection begins with a feeling and a story before it becomes a product.

We pay close attention to signature details: the softness of our color palettes, the balance between femininity and wearability, intricate yet refined embroideries, and prints that feel elegant rather than overwhelming. Even when trends change, we try to interpret them in a way that still feels authentically Saira Shakira.

This collection beautifully balances delicate femininity with effortless wearability. How important is comfort when designing festive summer pieces?

Comfort is extremely important because people want to feel as good as they look. Summers are all about warm weather, movement, and travel, so garments need to stay breathable, light, and easy to wear without compromising on elegance.

The pastel lilacs, blush tones, and floral detailing in BLOOM feel very cinematic. Were there any travel memories, moods, or references behind the palette?

Yes, the palette for BLOOM was deeply connected to a feeling of softness. A lot of the pastel lilacs and blush tones came from memories of spring evenings while traveling through Europe, especially moments where everything feels slowed down and dreamlike: faded hotel interiors, sunset skies through train windows, and quiet gardens in bloom.

We wanted the visuals to feel like stepping into a memory: delicate, warm, and slightly surreal.

As designers, do you both naturally gravitate toward different aesthetics, or are your tastes surprisingly similar?

We actually have very different visual instincts, which is what makes our collaboration work. One of us naturally leans toward softer, romantic, and detail heavy aesthetics, while the other is drawn more toward structure, restraint, and cleaner compositions.

What is interesting is that our tastes overlap in intention. We are both drawn to work that feels immersive and thoughtful, pieces that create a mood rather than simply looking pretty.

What’s one detail in this collection that people might overlook at first glance, but you personally love the most?

One detail we love in this collection is the way negative space is treated almost like part of the design itself. At first glance, people usually notice the florals, but the subtle gaps and breathing room between elements create a rhythm that makes the collection feel alive instead of crowded.

Pakistani women today want outfits that feel fashionable yet practical. How has the modern woman influenced your design philosophy over the years?

The modern Pakistani woman has completely reshaped the way we think about design. Women today are balancing careers, families, social lives, and personal expression all at once, so fashion can no longer be just visually beautiful. It has to move with them, feel comfortable, and adapt to different moments of their day.

Social media has changed how fashion is consumed. Do you feel collections now need a stronger storytelling element beyond just the clothes?

Yes, absolutely. Social media platforms like Instagram have transformed fashion from a seasonal experience into a constant stream of visual content. People no longer just see a collection; they experience it through short videos, styling edits, behind the scenes moments, and digital campaigns.

Because of that, garments alone can easily get lost unless they are tied together by a strong narrative or emotion that people can connect with.

If you had to describe BLOOM Lawn ’26 in just three words, what would they be?

Organic. Radiant. Evolving.

Cancer is one of the most feared words in our society, often whispered about, shrouded in silence, and surrounded by misconceptions. For many in Pakistan, myths such as “cancer means death” or “it only affects older women” prevent people from seeking timely checkups. But the truth is clear: Early Detection Saves Lives.

This article brings together practical steps for self-examination, guidance on screenings, and a myth-busting lens to empower readers with hope and awareness.

Why Early Detection Matters

Early diagnosis can make the difference between life and death. According to medical experts, cancers like breast, cervical, and colon cancer are highly treatable when caught in their earliest stages. Timely detection not only improves survival chances but also lowers the intensity of treatment.

Self-Checks: Empowering You with Early Detection

Self-awareness is powerful. Regular self-exams help you notice unusual changes early.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For breast health:

  1. Stand in front of a mirror— check for changes in size, shape, or skin texture.
  2. Raise your arms— look for dimpling, swelling, or changes in the nipple.
  3. Feel with your fingers— use circular motions across the breast and armpit area.

For skin health:

  • Monitor new moles or changes in existing ones.
  • Look out for sores that don’t heal.

When to Seek Screenings

While self-exams are important, medical screenings are essential.

Breast cancer: Mammograms are recommended for women over 40, or earlier if there’s family history.

  • Cervical cancer: Regular Pap smears can detect early abnormalities.
  • Colon cancer: Screenings such as colonoscopies are recommended after 45.
  • Men’s health: Prostate screenings after 50 or earlier with family history.

Remember: Don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Preventive screenings can reveal hidden issues before they become life-threatening.

Some stars light up our screens and touch our hearts in ways we can never forget. For millions of Pakistanis, Umar Shah and his brother Ahmed Shah were that star. Together, the duo rose to fame through their unforgettable appearances on ARY’s Jeeto Pakistan and became household names, especially loved during Ramazan transmissions where their innocence and charm brought smiles to every home.

The heartbreaking news of Umar Shah’s passing — confirmed by his family — has left the nation in shock and sorrow. Umar suffered a cardiac arrest, a tragedy no one could have foreseen for someone so young and full of life.

From the moment he stepped onto the stage with Ahmed, Umar’s sweet nature and genuine warmth captured hearts. Viewers cherished the brotherly banter, the way they complemented each other, and how naturally Umar fit into the limelight without ever losing his innocence. He wasn’t just a “child star” — he was family to every viewer who watched him grow.

Beyond the screen, Umar was known for his humility, kindness, and bright smile that could instantly light up a room. He represented all that is pure about childhood, a reminder of the joy and laughter children bring into the world. His loss feels deeply personal, not only for his family but for the countless fans who felt connected to his journey.

As tributes pour in from across the country, it is clear that Umar’s presence left an imprint far greater than his years. He may have been with us for a short time, but the love he spread was boundless.

Today, we mourn Umar Shah — but we also celebrate him. His legacy will live on in the laughter he shared, the joy he brought to Ramazan nights, and the innocence that made him unforgettable.

Rest in peace, dear Umar. You will forever remain in our prayers and in our hearts.

The Situation on Ground

Pakistan is facing one of its harshest monsoon seasons in recent history. The rains, combined with glacial melt and dam discharges from across the border, have left large parts of the country under water. The human toll has been devastating: more than 800 people have lost their lives, with nearly half of these deaths occurring in August alone. In Punjab, over 160,000 people have been forced to flee their homes after swollen rivers and unexpected dam releases submerged entire settlements.

In the north, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been worst hit. Flash floods, landslides, and a sudden cloudburst in Buner wiped out entire communities, killing over 200 people in a single day. Districts like Swat, Bajaur, Battagram, and Mansehra remain cut off, with damaged infrastructure hampering rescue efforts. Meanwhile, Punjab’s Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers are overflowing, threatening farmland and villages downstream. Gilgit-Baltistan and Hunza face another kind of disaster — Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) triggered by intense heat and rapid melting, which have destroyed roads, bridges, and fertile valleys.

Why Are These Floods Happening?

The 2025 floods are not just a natural calamity — they are the result of multiple overlapping crises:

Climate Change: Rising global temperatures are fueling heavier monsoon downpours and more frequent cloudbursts. The Buner cloudburst that unleashed more than 150mm of rain in just one hour is a chilling example.

Glacial Melting: Northern glaciers are melting at record speed due to extreme heat waves, creating dangerous glacial lakes that can burst without warning.

Weak Infrastructure: Clogged drains, unplanned construction on natural waterways, and poor river management have left towns and cities defenseless.

Deforestation: Cutting down trees has stripped hillsides of their natural barriers, worsening soil erosion and landslides.

Limited Warning Systems: Sudden events like cloudbursts and GLOFs are hard to predict, and Pakistan’s early warning mechanisms remain underdeveloped.

Cross-Border Tensions: India’s sudden release of dam water into rivers flowing downstream has added pressure on Punjab, forcing mass evacuations.

The Human Face of the Floods

Behind these statistics are real lives: families who have lost homes, children stranded without schools, farmers whose crops have vanished under water. The tragedy is not just the destruction of land and property but the erasure of stability and livelihoods. For many, recovery will take years.

How We Can Help

This is a national crisis — but it demands a collective response.

In the immediate term:

l Donate to credible relief groups such as Alkhidmat, Al Mustafa Trust, and other organizations providing food, tents, medical supplies, and clean water.

l Raise awareness on social platforms so global attention remains on Pakistan’s plight.

l Organize drives in your communities — blankets, hygiene kits, and water filters are among the most urgent needs.

For the long run:

l Rebuild smarter with flood-resistant housing and infrastructure.

l Invest in reforestation to restore natural defenses.

l Develop strong drainage systems in urban centers to prevent recurring urban flooding.

l Strengthen forecasting and early warning systems to prepare communities before disaster strikes.

l Demand climate justice — Pakistan contributes less than 1% of global emissions yet bears one of the heaviest burdens of climate change. Wealthier nations must support adaptation efforts.

A Closing Word

The floods of 2025 are more than a natural disaster — they are a wake-up call. They have shown us how vulnerable Pakistan is, but also how resilient its people can be. Relief efforts are underway, yet the road to recovery is long and steep.

If we act now, not just with charity but with vision — Pakistan can emerge stronger, with cities that can withstand storms, rivers that are managed wisely, and communities that are safer. Until then, our duty is clear: to help, to rebuild, and to never let this tragedy be forgotten.

This 14th August, we honour our heritage and look towards the horizon By the Editor, Good Times Magazine

Every year, as the clock strikes midnight on the 14th of August, a familiar rush of emotion sweeps across our nation;  pride, gratitude, and a quiet yet powerful hope for the future. The green and white flag flutters in the summer breeze, reminding us of a moment in history when a dream became reality, when courage and vision converged to give birth to Pakistan.

Seventy-eight years ago, our forefathers stood united under the banner of faith, determination, and resilience. They dared to imagine a land where we could live with dignity, shape our own destiny, and pass on to future generations the freedom they had so fiercely fought for. This Independence Day, we remember not only their sacrifices, but also their unwavering belief in the possibilities of tomorrow.

Pakistan’s journey has been one of challenges, yes — but also of remarkable triumphs. From the brilliance of our artists to the grit of our entrepreneurs, from the determination of our athletes to the compassion of our humanitarians, our story is one of a people who refuse to give up. The world has seen our resilience in the face of adversity, and our ability to rise — stronger each time.

Yet independence is not just a celebration of the past; it is a responsibility for the present. It asks each of us to be custodians of the values on which our nation was built — unity, faith, and discipline. It calls on us to contribute, in our own ways, to building a Pakistan where opportunity is abundant, justice is equal, and hope is never in short supply.

So, this 14th August, as our streets are lit with the glow of green, as children’s laughter fills the air with patriotic songs, and as we stand hand in hand as one people, let us remember: the real strength of Pakistan lies not in its mountains or rivers, but in the hearts of its people. In you. In me. In all of us.

Here’s to Pakistan — resilient, vibrant, and ever hopeful. May our future be as bright as the promise of that first dawn of independence.

Pakistan Zindabad.

There are people who, even in the face of immense pain, choose to radiate light. Zahra Khan was one of them.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 30s, Zahra didn’t just fight for her life—she fought for awareness, for community, and for every woman who felt isolated in her diagnosis. Her journey was not just marked by chemotherapy and scans, but by courage, creativity, and the unwavering desire to turn her experience into something meaningful.

Zahra first came into the public eye through her brave documentation of her cancer journey on Instagram via her platform, @heybreastie—a space she created for honest conversations about healing, identity, and resilience. It quickly became a source of hope and solidarity for women across Pakistan and beyond.

But Zahra wasn’t just a survivor—she was a creator. Amidst her recovery, she launched @ifyoulikecheese, a small-batch cheesecake business that blended comfort, sweetness, and a slice of joy in every order. Her cheesecakes were more than dessert—they were a reminder that even during the hardest times, we can still create, dream, and connect with others.

In October 2023, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Zahra spoke candidly about her experience with stage II breast cancer—offering strength, vulnerability, and hope to women everywhere. She was in remission then, continuing to inspire others with her voice, her smile, and her signature kindness.

Sadly, life had other plans. Zahra was diagnosed again—this time with a more aggressive form of cancer. She fought with all the strength she had, but this chapter ended differently.

As we grieve her passing, we are reminded of a powerful truth: healing doesn’t always look the way we expect. Strength doesn’t always lead to survival. Sometimes, the bravest thing is simply to endure—with grace, with faith, and with love.

Zahra Khan may no longer be with us, but her legacy remains etched in every life she touched. In every message of support she sent. In every heartfelt post she wrote. In every bite of cheesecake someone enjoyed when they needed comfort the most.

Her journey is a lesson for all women: to advocate for their health, to speak their truth, to hold on to softness even in moments of pain. She showed us that beauty and strength can exist in the same breath—that even the most difficult stories can inspire hope.

May Zahra’s soul find peace, and may her family find strength in the outpouring of love surrounding her memory. She reminded us that even in the darkest hours, there is still purpose to be found, stories to be told, and people to be held a little tighter.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we return.

As we step into Muharram, the start of the Islamic calendar, we are reminded that some beginnings are not celebrations — they are commemorations. This sacred month brings with it a solemn stillness, a collective hush that echoes through hearts and households. It is a time of remembrance, reflection, and above all, reverence.

At the heart of Muharram lies the tragedy of Karbala — a moment in history that continues to shape the moral and emotional fabric of our lives. Imam Hussain (A.S), the beloved grandson of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), stood on the burning plains of Karbala not with an army, but with an unshakable truth. Surrounded by his family and a handful of loyal companions, he chose dignity over surrender, sacrifice over silence.

Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, marks the ultimate stand against tyranny. It is not just a historical date — it is a living, breathing reminder of what it means to speak out, stand firm, and remain human in the face of inhumanity.

Here in Pakistan, Muharram is not just observed — it is felt. From the chants of nohas in majalis to the silent strength of a child offering water at a sabeel, the spirit of Hussain (A.S) runs deep in our rituals. But beyond the ceremonies, lies a greater call: to embody the values of Karbala in our everyday lives — to be just, to be kind, to be courageous.

At Good Times, we believe that storytelling is a powerful tool for preserving heritage and shaping perspective. This Muharram, we honour not just the martyrdom of Hussain (A.S), but the timeless legacy he left behind — one that teaches us that truth, no matter how heavy, must be carried with grace.

As we mourn, let us also reflect. As we grieve, let us grow. And as we remember, let us rise — stronger in faith, clearer in conscience.

In a city brimming with salons and fleeting trends, Aieena by Mastoorah Burki stands as a sanctuary of timeless beauty. Named after the Urdu word for “mirror,” Aieena is not just a place—it’s a philosophy. With her signature touch, Mastoorah Burki transforms more than faces; she transforms confidence, presence, and emotion. From her humble beginnings as a freelance artist in Toronto to becoming one of Lahore’s most sought-after bridal stylists, Mastoorah’s journey is a story of passion, precision, and pure artistry. In this exclusive Good Times interview, she opens up about her beginnings, her brides, and the beauty that lives beyond the mirror.

Tell us the story behind Aieena — how did it all begin?

It all began with a deep passion for beauty and a desire to help others feel confident in their own skin. I started as a freelance makeup artist in Toronto and later expanded into hairstyling after moving back to Pakistan. That’s when I opened a home-based makeup studio — with a dream of evolving into a full-service beauty salon and spa. That dream became Aieena. The name itself, which means ‘mirror’ in Urdu, reflects everything I believe in — how you see yourself, and how you want the world to see you.

What inspired you to become a makeup artist and open your own salon?

I’ve always been a creative person. The art of makeup, playing with color and enhancing features — it all fascinates me. I pursued learning the right techniques because I wanted to help people feel like the best version of themselves. Knowing I can deliver exactly what a client envisions gave me the confidence to open my own space.

How would you describe the signature “Aieena” look?

If you’re asking about the signature bridal look — it’s timeless and classic. While we tailor each look to the bride’s preferences, when given creative freedom, I always go for a traditional middle parting, a full bun adorned with flowers, flawless base, soft eye makeup, and defined lips. A sophisticated look that never goes out of style. Trends come and go, but your wedding photos last a lifetime — I want my brides to look just as beautiful 25 years from now.

What’s a typical day like at your salon in Gulberg?

We open at 10:30 AM and stay busy with appointments and walk-ins throughout the day. My manager oversees scheduling and staff assignments, while I personally handle signature haircuts and makeup services. Between client consultations, staff training, and ensuring every guest feels cared for, the day flows beautifully — and we wrap up by 7 PM. It’s busy, fulfilling, and I love every minute.

Which bridal look has been your all-time favorite to create — and why?

Honestly, I love all my bridal looks — as long as the bride walks out happy. Each one is special. But if I had to choose, I’d say I always lean toward the classic look. There’s just something timeless about it.

Who was your first bride — and do you remember how you felt?

Yes, vividly! My first desi bride was in my home studio. She was a Valima bride who wanted dewy skin, peach lips, bold eyes, and a messy bun. We were both so excited. Her joy was infectious, and she even wrote me a thank-you letter afterward. That moment confirmed that this was the right path for me.

What’s the most requested service at your salon?

Honestly, all our services are quite popular! From root touch-ups to balayage, precision cuts to relaxing massages, facials, and makeup — each department stays busy and thriving.

You offer hair, makeup, and skin — how do you ensure excellence across all?

You can’t run a successful salon without a well-trained team. I’ve personally trained in cut and color from L’Oréal London before opening the studio, so I oversee both the makeup and hair departments closely. As for skin services, we’ve hired experienced spa professionals to ensure the best.

What beauty trend do you think needs to go, and which are you loving right now?

The red nose trend definitely needs to go! I’m loving minimalist glam — cat eyes, natural skin, and bold brows are my current favorite.

Any beauty secrets you swear by for glowing skin?

Manual facials. I truly believe in the power of hands — facials done without machines are incredibly nourishing and therapeutic. The massage and relaxation also reduce stress, which reflects in your skin.

How do you stay calm and focused during bridal season chaos?

Experience is your best teacher. I don’t overbook, and I prioritize pre-booked clients over walk-ins — and I make sure to communicate that clearly. That keeps everything running smoothly.

Do you prefer classic bridal glam or bold experimental looks?

Classic will always be my first love — but I also enjoy the thrill of experimentation. It keeps me creatively alive.

If a bride only has one hour, what’s the one step you’d never skip?

Well, if a bride only has one hour, she’s definitely running late! But in all seriousness — I wouldn’t skip anything. Skin prep and a flawless base are essential, and so are the eyes and lips. I always recommend at least 1.5 hours for makeup and additional time for hair and setting.

Of all the brides you’ve worked with, has any story touched you deeply?

Yes. A bride I worked with this February left a lasting impression. She had lost her father years ago and was handling most of her wedding herself. She had a clear vision of how she wanted to look — and I poured my heart into making it come true. When her mother came to pick her up, she broke down in tears of joy. That moment still gives me goosebumps.

How do you stay current with international trends while staying true to Pakistani traditions?

It’s all about consistent training and staying curious. I attend workshops, learn new techniques, and blend them with our rich traditions to create something fresh yet rooted.

What advice would you give to young makeup artists trying to break into the beauty world?

Work hard. Learn the rules. Build your profile and don’t let setbacks shake your confidence. This field takes time — but your dedication will take you places.

Describe a moment when you felt truly proud of your work.

Honestly, it’s the little moments — when a client compliments our salon’s cleanliness, or when I see my team improving and glowing in their roles. Every satisfied client makes me proud.

Outside of work, what keeps you inspired and recharged?

Family, exercise, and travel. They keep me centered and creatively fulfilled.

What’s next for Aieena — any exciting plans or projects ahead?

There’s a lot brewing! But for now, I believe every new day brings opportunity — and I’m always ready for the next chapter.

There’s a certain kind of magic in a dream that begins in childhood—and Lal Majid turned hers into a delicious reality.
