For Beenish Shah, a future in medicine once seemed to be the plan, but fashion was always the passion. Drawn to colours, fabrics and intricate embroidery, she chose to turn that creative instinct into a label of her own. Built from scratch, her Lahore-based brand embraces the beauty of simplicity, with thoughtful details and effortless silhouettes for the modern woman.

In conversation with GT, Beenish shares the story behind her beginnings, the lessons of building a business and her vision for what comes next.

You began with pre-medical studies but found your calling in fashion. What was the moment that made you decide to follow that passion professionally?

I’ve always been drawn to creativity, colours and beautiful details, even when I was studying pre-medical. I think the turning point came when I realised that fashion wasn’t just something I enjoyed — it was something I genuinely wanted to build my life around. It took courage to step away from the path I had originally chosen, but I decided that if I was going to invest my time and energy into something, it should be something I truly loved. That decision eventually became the foundation of Beenish Shah.

You built your business from scratch. What did those early days look like, and what was the hardest lesson you had to learn?

The early days were a mix of excitement, uncertainty and a lot of hard work. Everything was hands-on, from developing designs and choosing fabrics to understanding customers and figuring out the business side of fashion. The hardest lesson was learning that talent alone isn’t enough. You also need consistency, patience and the ability to adapt. Building a brand takes time, and there are many moments when you have to believe in your vision before anyone else does.

Your brand describes itself as “Beautiful in its simplicity.” How do you translate that philosophy into clothes that still make a statement?

For me, simplicity doesn’t mean being ordinary. It means knowing when enough is enough. I like creating pieces where the fabric, silhouette, colour and craftsmanship can speak for themselves. A beautiful cut, an elegant detail or carefully placed embellishment can have a much stronger impact than something that feels overly complicated. I want the clothes to feel timeless while still making the woman wearing them feel special.

Your designs feature flowing silhouettes, delicate embellishments and varied colour palettes. Walk us through how an idea becomes a finished Beenish Shah outfit.

It usually begins with a feeling or an image. I might be inspired by a particular colour, fabric, texture, architecture or even something I see in everyday life. From there, I start thinking about the woman who will wear it ,how she will move in it and how she should feel.

Then comes the fabric and silhouette, followed by the details and embellishments. I’m quite particular about balance, so I keep refining the design until everything feels harmonious. The final piece should look effortless, even though there is a lot of thought behind it.

Who is the woman you design for, and what do you want her to feel when she wears your clothes?

I design for a woman who appreciates elegance but also wants to feel like herself. She can be traditional, contemporary, understated or glamorous ,there isn’t one definition of a Beenish Shah woman.

More than anything, I want her to feel confident, beautiful and comfortable in her own identity. When a woman puts on something I’ve designed and feels that it reflects her personality, that’s the greatest compliment for me.

Pakistan’s fashion market is competitive. What makes a customer choose Beenish Shah, and how are you building on that distinction?

I think it comes down to our approach to elegance and wearability. We focus on creating pieces that are beautifully crafted but still allow the woman to be the centre of attention. I want the clothes to have an identity without overpowering the person wearing them.

We’re constantly evolving our designs while staying true to the values that define the brand — quality, femininity, simplicity and attention to detail. That consistency is very important to me.

What moment has made you feel most proud of taking a chance on yourself and starting your label?

Honestly, it isn’t one particular moment. It’s seeing women choose my designs for important moments in their lives. Whether it’s a wedding, a celebration or simply a day when they want to feel beautiful, knowing that something I created has become part of that memory is incredibly rewarding.

It reminds me why I took that leap in the first place.

What is the next chapter for Beenish Shah, and what would you love the brand to become?

I want Beenish Shah to continue growing while remaining true to its identity. I would love to see the brand reach more women, both within Pakistan and internationally, and become recognised for its distinctive approach to understated elegance.

The goal isn’t simply to become bigger. I want us to become more refined, more recognisable and more meaningful ,a brand women return to because they trust its aesthetic and know they’ll always find something that feels special.
