We speak to influencer Minahil Wattoo about her style, her fashion influences and more

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is always evolving depends on my mood and the trends. But if i have to describe it in a few words, I’d say it’s a combination of classy and trendy with a hint of casual chic!

Your favourite fashion designer?

Have been obsessed with lirika Maloshim and Mohsin Naveed Ranjha for over a year now!

Do you believe in sustainable fashion? Have you changed your wardrobe to make it more sustainable in the recent years?

Yes I do. I am obsessed with solids and colour blocking these days. I own at-least 2-3 different solid pieces in each colour and it’s crazy how much you can do with just a few of those!

Where in Pakistan do you love to shop?

Apart from the stunning designer stores that we have so many of in Pakistan, I love going to Liberty Market. I hardly shop there because I can’t bargain but i loveeee capturing the aesthetic and the vibe of the market on my camera! (For insta mainly 😉

What is the oldest item in your closet?

My black Zara T-shirt. It’s sooo basic but so soft at this point in life and since it’s black, it looks like it’s in perfect condition everytime. I can still style it up or down and it never disappoints. Safe to say it’s not only the oldest but also my most favourite item in my closet.

What, in your opinion, are must have items that are essential to a great closet?

  1. A black T-shirt
  2. A white button down
  3. A classic pair of jeans
  4. White tailored pants
  5. At least 3 pairs of neutral heels
  6. Basic gold accessories

And you’re sorted! You can elevate any basic look with a nice pair of heels and gold accessories! Yes, even a white shirt and a black T-shirt!

Your most prized possession?

My mom’s 24k gold pendant that has Allah engraved in and it was given to her by my late grandfather when I was born. (Emotionally and financially 🙂

Your favourite accessory?

Any sort of solid gold jewelry! Literally!

What item in your closet makes you cringe?

OMG! My Ed Hardy T-shirt with all those diamantés engraved in a skull. Haha, it’s almost vintage but i need my kids to see it.

We speak to actor and singer Farhan Saeed about his journey in Lollywood, his hobbies and his inspirations

You started off in a boy band called Jal. How did the journey from there to here happen?

I started my career with Jal and I would say it was meant to be. I was performing at one of my university’s events where a common friend introduced me to Gohar Mumtaz and we recorded Woh Lamhey and from there we just never looked back.

How does it feel seeing yourself on the cover once again?

As always it feels so good to work with GT and to be on their cover story. And my favourite part is communicating with my fans through GT.

How are things with you and Urwa now?

Unanswered.

How did you decide to pursue acting as a career? Did you always want to become an actor?

I never wanted to be an actor but it just happened! To be honest initially, I never thought I would be taking up acting this seriously. Now I think I’m in love with the process of acting as I want to discover the new roles and the boundaries I can push as an actor and I think that keeps me going. Choosing a right script, the right role and performing to my best abilities is what I’m enjoying right now.

Has your perception of the entertainment industry in Pakistan changed over time?

I don’t have a perception about the entertainment industry as such but yes one keeps meeting people everyday and keeps discovering. I also think our entertainment industry is very talented. Be it music, drama or the film industry we are like a family. We are a very small industry and everyone knows everyone and I think overall it’s a good industry but the perception as such has never changed. I think our industry is different than the other industries in the world and I see people standing for each other quite often in this industry.

What are your hobbies outside of singing and acting?

I like sports. I have always been a great fan of outdoor sports. Cricket, volleyball and table tennis have got to be my favourites. So the minute I get some time off I love indulging in these sports.

Do you work out?

I do work out but unfortunately, I’m not that regular. But I am strong believer of going to the gym. It keeps you sane, fit and fresh.

People in Pakistan don’t consider signing or acting a proper profession. What do you have to say about that?

Unfortunately, that’s sad. But once you cross a certain line then you know it’s a parallel and proper profession. Fortunately, in singing and acting Allah has been kind to me so it never came to my mind whether it is a proper profession or not but people would be very surprised to see how much actors and singers earn.

How do you handle the fame that comes with being an actor? Does the hate or the pressure ever get to you?

Well, I think once you’re a successful actor or a singer that comes with it and you know that’s when people like your work. I have learnt to filter the haters and that really helps. But people think that actors and singers are public property and anyone can say anything about them. I am fortunate enough to filter all that and I don’t let it get to me if I don’t want to. I really like and respect my fans and whatever we are, we are because of them.  The good and bad just comes with it. We are what we are because of the love we get from our fans. My fans mean the world to me and make me strive to keep doing better with each passing day.

What’s your favourite part about your work?

My work is my joy and passion, it’s what keeps me going everyday – so I love everything about it. Making new music, performing at a concert in front my fans, acting in a drama, shooting for a TVC and now making my film Tich Button – the journey of creating something for people to see and react is an altogether different high … and what keeps me going.

Name three things on your bucket list?

Performing Hajj. Travelling to my favourite destination. I have quite a few actually… third would be doing a dream script.

Tell us about your first TV shoot. What was it like?

My first shoot was a music video Woh Lamhey. Everybody knows about it. It’s a memory that stays with me forever.  T-shirt, pants, shoes and car, everything was borrowed. When we shot the video for Woh Lamhey. We had no experience and yet Allah blessed us with the number one song of Pakistan for months.

Who is your inspiration?

My inspiration would be any hardworking individual I love and respect wholeheartedly. The people who are honest with their profession inspire me. I literally note every single thing about people who I think are very honest with their profession. You could be a salon worker, waiter, singer and if you are honest with your work, it shows and if you are not then that shows too and that’s how you lose my respect right then and there.

Describe your perfect day off when you’re not working.

Waking up then breakfast, gym and friends coming over for a good jamming session. Basically, lots of chilling.

What advice do you have for aspiring actors?

Just be honest and passionate about your work. Just don’t do your work for the sake of fame and money but instead do it for the love of your profession. Whatever you are doing be at acting, singing just do it wholeheartedly and then there’s no way anyone can pull you down.

Sasha Raja had one of the best Eid looks. This romantic saree in the shades of pink and green really stole our heart. We especially love the pearl details of the blouse. She accessorized the outfit with floral earrings and a few rings.

Mariam Ishtiaq chose to wear Ansab Jehangir for Eid and we’re here for it! She let the outfit do most of the talking which is great. Her long wavy hair was tucked back from one side and she wore sparkly flats. Our fave part of this photo is her baby bump!

Hiba Mehmood looks absolutely fire in this Farah Talib Aziz outfit for Eid. We love the candy colours but most of all we love how Hiba styled this look. She accessorized her look with a metallic Dior Bag and Aquazurra heels and the coolest shades ever!

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style has two extremes, I’m either dressed to the nines or in sweats and most times it’s the latter. I’d say it’s comfy glam…if that’s a thing?

Your favourite fashion designer?

Definitely Karl Lagerfeld, such a legend. I love what he has done for Chanel and actually love buying from his own label as well.

Do you believe in sustainable fashion? Have you changed your wardrobe to make it more sustainable in the recent years?

I definitely believe in sustainable fashion since I’m such a hoarder, I need my clothes to last me a long time (even if I’ll only wear them once lol). To be honest, I was into fast fashion since I didn’t want to ever repeat outfits on my insta feed but now that has completely changed. I invest into classic pieces and always change at least one aspect of the outfit when I re-wear it to make it look different and fun. I’ve also tried to shift my focus from branded bags/shoes to buying jewelry because it retains value and there’s no wear and tear.

Where is Pakistan do you love to shop?

Sana Safinaz, Elan and Zaha.

What is the oldest item in your closet?

Probably the saris from my mother’s bridal trousseau.

What, in your opinion, are must have items that are essential to a great closet?

Having staples that fit you well in neutral colours and some statement items for that pop of colour. A black pant that goes with almost everything, a structured blazer, a nice pair of straight jeans, under garments that fit (SO IMPORTANT). Also, having a comfy yet glam pair of black heels will change your life.

Your most prized possession?

My first diamond ring gifted by my mom.

Your favourite accessory?

Definitely earrings. I think they also help in framing your face.

What item in your closet makes you cringe?

Chanel heels that I desperately want to love but they give me granny vibes sadly. Will keep them till I’m 60 and then maybe I can wear them.

Makeup artist Henna Baig of The Cutting Edge Salon talks to us about her hair and makeup secret

Makeup trends for summer?

The Korean gradient lip tint! It adds enough colour to the lips without making them look outlined and done. Eyes are matte in earthy or neutral shades with individual false lashes and brushed out eyebrows.

What are some tips to make foundation look natural during the summer?

l       Use a low coverage matte foundation (preferably mineral or liquid)

l       Conceal only if and where required

l       Let the weather and the natural skin oils play as highlight, adding extra highlight will only make the face look sweaty.

How do you suggest people protect their natural skin and hair from makeup and styling?

For skin:

  1. Cleanse your face properly and make sure there is no makeup on your face when you go to bed.
  2. Scrub twice a week (at night) followed by a sleep in face mask according to your skin type.
  3. Invest in a good foundation brand that doesn’t clog your pores.
  4. Always use a sunscreen (day time) and moisturizer or any primer before applying foundation.
  5. Use very gentle cleansers to remove eye makeup and work with a very soft hand.
  6. Scrub your lips before going to bed especially if you have been using dark/bright lip colors.
  7. Keep your makeup brushes and sponges clean.

For hair:

  1. Make sure you also prioritise haircare
  2. Always invest in professional hair products like a sulphate free shampoo and a deep conditioning mask.
  3. Use a heat protection serum before styling.
  4. Treat your hair with a protein treatment every weekend.

What is your go-to skincare routine?

I like to cleanse and tone my skin daily. I scrub twice a week at night, followed by a sleep in face mask. Always use sunscreen and moisturizer!

Never sleep with makeup on!

Keep yourself hydrated!

What mistakes do most brides make in your opinion? If you could give the brides who come to you advice, what would it be?

Keep yourself hydrated at all times! Don’t neglect your body and the nutrition and hydration it needs weeks prior to your big day. Also, red is not always the way to go. Brides should look into peaches, off-whites, golds and pinks as they compliment our skin tones. There should be one focus point in the makeup, either glam up the eyes or the lips. Don’t do both! A no makeup look is done with makeup. It doesn’t mean that you use NO makeup.

What challenges have you faced as an MUA in Pakistan?

Clients have these heavily filtered photos and videos saved as makeup inspo where all the brides look like flawless porcelain dolls. It’s impossible to match their unrealistic expectations.

What consists of your everyday makeup kit?

Moisturizer, concealer, mascara, brow gel, lip and cheek tint.

We speak to millennial entrepreneurs and NCA graduate Ammal Naeem and her partner Eman about their new design studio called Outcomes.

Tell us a little about Outcomes.

It started with the vision to create value based designs and find likeminded designers willing to explore the realm of creativity. The idea is to remain free of mental barriers when designing so that the creative mind is given the space to flourish and create designs that are new and authentic.

What are your backgrounds?

Ammal: I did bachelors in architecture from NCA.

Eman: I have done my BBA from FAST.

Who came up with the idea?

Ammal: It’s been a combined desire for both of us wanting to start a venture that would support our collective vision. I wanted to bring my designs to life which I had been designing since my student life at NCA.

Eman: I wanted to use my skills of marketing to promote new ideas.

What are your roles?

Ammal: Since we want the design studio to be a space for all creative minds to be able to express themselves, we both act as designers simultaneously working on evolving the entire concept. I primarily I focus on the design element and where as Eman focuses more on the finances and the marketing. The production is a combined effort and we wouldn’t be able to handle one without the other.

Do you think your time at NCA helped you get an edge over other designers/architects?

Studying architecture from NCA taught me to question every design I came up with. The question ‘why?’ had a major impact on me as I was taught to question everything I did and why I did it. It liberated me and led me to spend time with myself to figure out what I was truly passionate about.

How are you able to use social media as a tool for your business?

Social media has the power of reaching a far greater audience than ever possible before. We are not limited to our geographical boundaries and can reach a lot more people all around the globe. It also has provided us the opportunity to start small and test our designs out before we decide to take this on a larger platform.

What advice would you give other young people like yourselves who are thinking about starting their own ventures?

As far as we have come we believe that it is paramount that you are passionate about what you are doing. We know that it has been said to death by now but there are so many hurdles that come with starting a new venture and if you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, it’ll be very hard to get through those difficult periods.

Any last comments for your readers?

As much as it brings us happiness to be able to share it in this form with you, our struggle, especially as women working in a predominantly male dominated field (vendors, contractors etc.) has been substantial. We want to appreciate all those who became a part of the journey leading to the first collection.  Here’s to hoping for a future that makes it easier for women to come out and be able to explore their creative side!

One of our favourite looks this fortnight was Bollywood actor Sara Ali Khan in Faraz Manan for the Iifa Awards. She wore a peplum top by the Pakistani designer paired with flared pants. The embellished outfit turned heads at the red carpet. Sara chose to wear her hair down in loose waves. 10/10!

Make-up artist Geena Kashif gives us the best tips for summer

What are some makeup trends for summer?

  1. Clean Makeup look with a focus feature is the hottest summer trend in terms of makeup
  2. Metallic eye shadows
  3. Glass Skin
  4. Bold/glossy lips
  5. Kitten eyeliner
  6. Bronze Skin

What are some tips to make foundation look natural during the summer?

Less is more! Focus more on concealing areas where it is needed, use a sheer foundation, powder on areas where you crease and use a setting spray that holds your makeup in this heat and makes it transfer proof.

How do you suggest people protect their natural skin and hair from makeup and styling?

For skin, make sure to double cleanse your makeup followed by a skincare am and pm routine that should change after every 3 months. Make sure to use SPF daily and exfoliate your skin at least twice in a week.

For hair, I would highly recommend getting a hair mask. Hair oiling is a must and a heat protection spray when you use any hot tools.

What is your go to skincare routine?

My current go to skincare is cleansing my face with the Inkey Oat cleansing balm, The Ordinary Hylaronic Acid Serum, Glow Recipe Plum Plump cream, Clinique all about eyes eye cream, Aveeno Sunscreen SPF 50 followed by Huda beauty silk balm.

What mistakes do most brides make in your opinion?

The biggest mistake most brides do is to not take care of their skin or have a proper skincare routine that works for their skin type. You cannot expect magic to happen on your big day if you just wash your face with soap! Skincare is essential! If anything don’t sleep on SPF, moisturizer and an eye cream.

If you could give the brides who come to you advice, what would it be?

My advice would be to do your homework on how you want to look on your big day. Don’t be shy to have a conversation with your artist, tell them what you like and what suits you and then be open to the artist’s suggestions as well. All this will ensure that your experience is smooth and no time is wasted resulting in a great partnership where it is a win win situation for both the artist and the client.

What challenges have you faced as an MUA in Pakistan?

People have a lot of expectations from a makeup artist, they show us photos and videos that are filtered, airbrushed, smoothed and photo shopped to perfection and expect us to make their skin look just like that. The biggest challenge to date is educating the client about texture which is completely normal. Makeup sits on your face, it doesn’t make pores, bumps and fine lines vanish! Makeup will look like makeup! I highly encourage fellow artists to also go easy when editing their photos and videos, let’s normalize and embrace the realness of how makeup looks.

What consists of your every day makeup kit?

Glow recipe dew drops, Tarte Shape Tape concealer, Huda Glowish Luminous Powder, Lancôme Lash Idole Mascara, NARS Orgasm liquid blush, Mac Matte Bronzer, Dior Universal 001 palette, Makeup by Mario lipstick in Rasa.
