BHOOK ON A BUDGET Honey-Roasted Hasselback Potatoes

While these potatoes taste good just plain salted, adding a bit of honey and garlic just elevates the flavor and takes it to another level.

If you want a budget-friendly but fancy looking dinner side dish to impress your guests, say hello to honey roasted hasselback potatoes. Not only do they sound fancy, but possibly more importantly, they look like a lot of time and effort must have gone into making them, when in reality, it’s a matter of minutes. And the best part? They taste delicious. While these potatoes taste good just plain salted, adding a bit of honey and garlic just elevates the flavor and takes it to another level. Let’s make them.

Method:
Cut a sliver lengthways of the bottom of your potatoes so that they can sit flat on the baking tray. Using a sharp knife, make thin slices in the potato but DO NOT cut all the way through. Putting the potato on a wooden spoon or between a pair of skewers or chopsticks will help prevent you from slicing all the way down. Repeat with remaining potatoes. Put a small pat of butter on top of each potato and bake until slightly golden. While the potatoes are baking, heat 1/4 cup of honey in a saucepan, and grate in some garlic. Once the honey begins to bubble, add 2-3 tablespoons of mustard and a couple of pinches of salt. Take your potatoes out of the oven and using a baking brush or a spoon, coat each potato with the honey mustard glaze, making sure it falls into all the crevices. Put the potatoes back in the oven, making sure to brush them with the sauce at least twice more, for an additional 30-40 minutes, or until golden brown and caramelized. Serve warm and enjoy!

Ingredients:

4-5 medium potatoes
1/4 cup honey
2-3 tablespoons mustard
2-3 cloves garlic
Butter
Salt

We speak to influencer Jehangir Khan AKA Khan Diaries about his goals, his career as a male influencer and more.

How does it feel being one of the few male influencers in the industry?

It was pretty weird at first, but also game-changing. I always wanted to pave the way for male creators and encourage them to take risks.

How have you seen the social media game change since you started out?

When I started blogging in 2015, there were very few people in the game. Now you pick up a rock and you’d find an influencer underneath.

Who are your favourite Pakistani designers?

Munib Nawaz’s outfits are meant for me, they fit like a glove every time. I also love wearing my mothers brand, The Chapa House which is bringing a fusion of organic block printing back into the fashion game.

What do you do on your days off from work?

As a creative person, the mind never rests. I do like to spend quality time with family and friends and Netflix with my dog Odin.

Do you work out?

Yes! The only way I can fight all my demons. I believe it’s the best therapy for everybody.

What are your hobbies?

Traveling, experiencing different cultures, I also love learning languages.

Name three things on your bucket list.

  1. Do a short film as a lead.
  2. Be a successful entrepreneur.
  3. Take mama for Umrah / Hajj (In’sha’Allah).

What advice would you give to aspiring young people who want to be like you?

People will drag you down even if you join the herd mentality, so be fearless & BE YOU. Don’t be like me or anyone but discover yourself and be the best version of yourself. Also, stay humble!

What’s it like seeing yourself on the cover?

Amazing as always!

How did you decide to pursue acting as a career? Did you always want to be an actor?

Becoming a doctor or an architect was something that used to excite me. Theatre production followed by acting legit just happened randomly. A tiny tv appearance and here I am.

Has your perception of acting industry in Pakistan changed over the years?

Not really although there are surprises every now and then.

What are your hobbies outside of acting?

Travelling, reading, watching shows, exploring – I’m into a lot of things.

What is your beauty routine?

Lots of cleansing, moisturizing and hydration. Face masks every now and then. Also, I like to get hydra facials whenever I get the time.

Do you work out?

I try to keep up with my yoga routine.

How do you handle the fame that comes with being an actor? Does the hate or the pressure ever get to you?

Who doesn’t like fame? No complaints in that department Alhamdulilah. As far as the hate is concerned – I’m blessed with thick skin I believe. Trolls can be horrible and I’ve seen people suffer because of them but fortunately I can conveniently skip the hate. Also, who cares about the hate when there’s so much love in your life?

What’s your favourite part about your work?

Acting: I get to play different roles. I love doing character acting.

Production: the creativity and chaos of shoots

Activism: the satisfaction of fighting the good fight.

Who is your favourite designer?

I’m really liking stuff by YSL these days. I’m not the kind of person who likes everything by her favs so hard to name the list.

Name three things on your bucket list.

Blessed to be ticking a few recently. Some more are:

  1. Perform Umrah
  2. Designing and living in the house of my dreams
  3. Go to every Michelin star restaurant

Who is your inspiration?

My Amma

Describe your perfect day off when you’re not working.

Waking up to a lazy coffee hour in bed with my fur baby and the baby I married. Spending the day with my loved ones, maybe squeezing in an hour for yoga or taking a nice walk in the gorgeous Islamabad winter evening, planning for the upcoming vacation, having dinner at my fav Chinese restaurant followed by late night chit chats while munching on fresh peanuts and Kashmiri tea. Last thing would be catching up on an episode of whatever I’m watching or reading a few chapters of the book I’m reading then.

What advice would you give to young aspiring actors?

Don’t do everything that comes your way. Be selective. Choose wisely and most importantly never get disheartened. There’s always a place for talent!

What are some make up trends for the upcoming wedding season?

Clients are more inclined towards snatched and lifted looks this season. Though the classic gold eyes and red lips are still in demand nonetheless.

What tips can you give our readers to make their foundation look natural?

My top tip would be to prep your skin. If your canvas is well prepared and you’ve taken good skin care you hardly need foundation.

How do you suggest people protect their natural skin and hair from makeup and styling?

Primer before doing foundation and heat protecting spray before any hairstyling.

What is your go to skincare routine?

My routine is very basic with a Murad face wash and La Mer moisturizer. I exfoliate once a week and use masks at least three times in a month.

What mistakes do most brides make in your opinion?

Most times they want a makeup look that wouldn’t suit their face.

If you could give the brides who come to you advice, what would it be?

Please trust your makeup artist.

What challenges have you faced as an MUA in Pakistan?

Mainly, I’ve found that finding and building a team that can work with your vibe is quite the challenge.

What consists of your every day makeup kit?

A few things that make up my every day makeup kit are:

NARS foundation, MAC mascara, blush, gel eye liner, contour, lipstick and a lip liner.

Uzma Khan shows us that simplicity is truly the ultimate sophistication. She looks radiant in a black jumpsuit. She adds a pop of colour to her look with a customised sparkly green clutch.

Tell us about your journey. How did you decide to pursue a career in music? Is this something you always wanted to do?

With time, it grew more and more apparent to us that this was what was needed to be done.

How did you guys meet?

We both met at a gig for HBL when we were both still in university. We got to know each other there, one thing led to another and we started making songs together.

What are your hobbies outside of singing and performing?

Roshaan likes to play Fifa and F1 (along with other story based games), learn languages, and meditate. Hassan likes photography and cricket.

Has your perception of the entertainment industry in Pakistan changed overtime? If yes, how?

Our perception only changed with the changing landscape of the Pakistani music scene. When we started out, the industry was as expected, barren. But now, thanks to all of the new artists and of course the listeners, the industry is on the right track.

People in Pakistan don’t consider music or singing a “proper” profession. Did you have trouble with your parents or families when you decided to pursue this career?

Although Hassan and I were both graduates of Economics, during our university years we had to decide (at different points in our lives) if we wanted to get a job in the field of economics or strive to become a musician in Pakistan. Of course we had consider all factors and take a decision that was the most practical for us, which is why both of us eventually decided to become musicians.

What does the process of making look like for you guys?

Each song has its own story. Some songs come out smooth like butter, but for some our ideas just LOVE to take their sweet sweet time 🙂

What’s your favourite part about being a musician?

The one of a kind, special bond we get to build with our listeners.

Name three things on your bucket list.

Collaborate with an international level A-lister artist – Do at least one show in all the continents of the world (except Antarctica of course) – Fix the muslim shower in my washroom (like, you have to turn the entire tap offotherwise it just keeps leaking its just…annoying as hell…and I keep PROCRASTINATING TO GET A NEW ONE) (actually, after im done with this interview im going to get a new one…DONE)

Who is your inspiration?

There are many figures we look up to for various reasons——- but if we were to summarise it would be AR Rahman for both Hassan & Roshaan, and Diego Maradona for Roshaan

Describe your perfect day offwhen youre not working.

For Roshaan its a peaceful day of gaming while listening to a bossa nova playlist, for Hassan its cricket, photography and meditation.

What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?

Focus on becoming unique not skillful. Dont get us wrong, skill is a great thing and its really really good to practice your craft, but the intention should be to become one of a kind and to aid your own unique expression, not to acquire skill without knowing what to do with it. Consistently keep creating and releasing music and you will eventually find your audience. right things willl come to you at the right time.

One of our favourite fashionistas Mahnoor Ali Wattoo looked amazing in this outfit by Sapphire. We love how she styled the outfit. Her big chunky earrings and strappy heels are right on trend.

Mahira Khan has served SO many looks this week that it was honestly hard to choose the best one but this saree moment was the winner for us. Dressed in Faraz Manan Mahira looked like a dream. She wore her hair in waves and wore light makeup (in classic MK fashion).

Everyone’s fave rockstar Hassan Rahim has been serving looks! We’ve seen him take some risks with his outfits and this one has really paid off. Hassan wore a plain white turtleneck with these super retro green and black flared pants at the Coke Studio Live event in Dubai last week. His chunky black shoes tied the look together. We love it!

Haiya Bokhari always knows how to make a style statement and did just that at Hussain Rebar’s solo bridal show. She turned heads in this unique UJ Bespoke outfit. Haiya wore her hair in a sexy slicked back bun and accessorised the futuristic outfit with statement earrings. Her green shoes added a pop of colour.

Mubashra Ali Malik looks like the epitome of grace and beauty in this outfit by her sister’s brand, Saima Taimur Malik. We’re obsessed with the light pink organza outfit with the delicate silver work. Mubashra accessorises the look with diamond studs and bracelets, a stunning Judith Lieber clutch and sparkly heels. Just perfect!

Yes, you heard it right. Products such as glitters and embellishments are all back. Basically everything you wore in the 90’s and swore off of has made its comeback. Most people are referring to this trend as the Euphoria theme, inspired by the super popular TV show and its stunning makeup looks. “As the Euphoria theme carries on, there are splashes of frosty shades, a play with metallic accents with block silver or colour foil,” says makeup artist and founder of Studio One Makeup Lan Nguyen-Grealis. “Think shimmering highlights and adornment jewels around the eye with clean skin.”

Beauty trends will come and go but it’s important to make sure you give extra importance to your skin during fall. Drink lots of water to make sure you’re hydrated, apply that extra lip balm to keep those chapped lips away and run a humidifier!

How does fashion differ in the two metropolitan cities that you’ve lived in, Lahore and Germany?

In Germany it frequently changes but also nobody really bothers if you are stuck in the 90’s or 80’s fashion. You have all kind a freedom of wearing anything. Whereas in Pakistan I always had to prepare my mind before wearing something odd or out of Fashion. But I heard things are changing now..

Tell us a little about this new collection. 

Our new collection Miray is an exploration of traditional craft and modern day silhouettes! It uncovers fresh colour palettes and innovative techniques that come together to make your wedding experience unforgettable.

Tell us your vision behind this shoot.

This shoot was based in Shalimar Gardes, Lahore, a stunning location that we were mesmerised by ourselves! The campaign aims to translate how full of life our wedding celebrations are, show casing fun filled events and intimate relationships! The truely majestic Mughal gardens provided the perfect backdrop for this years traditional bridal collection.

How did FTA come into being?

Since I was young I was so interested in learning adda handwork embroidery and stitching a doing it myself. I spent years hand embroidery my own clothes in all sorts of different techniques. It was only when my elder son left for university that I got the courage to start my own work shop! I started with one Karigar who sat in a garage in my house and Alhumdullilah today I have that same Karigar along with 500 plus more!

What are some challenges you’ve faced as a designer in this industry?

There are so many challenges! Basic requirements of running a business; water, electricity, gas, infrastructure, are our main hurdles. It’s been quite a journey over the past 18 years but now we’ve accepted these challenges and try to take them in our stride.

What is your favourite part about this field of work?

I love all of my team, they are like family to me. It’s the best part of my day to day routine as so many of them have been with me for over a decade.

What do you do on your days off from work?

I love to spend my holidays with my family; my husband and three kids as well as my most adorable little grandson!

What is something you’d like to change about the Pakistani fashion industry?

I would encourage fashion councils to set some rules and standards! I understand imitation happens but it should be on a high street level not on a designer imitating other designers level. There should be some checks and balances.

What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?

Nothing is achievable with out hardwork. We worked for decades to get where we are, nothing comes over night! Try your very hardest and then leave it up to Allah SWT.

How does it feel seeing yourself on the cover?

Amazing like always, just like being the face of a brand, face of a drama or tvc project, it’s special.

How did you decide to pursue acting as a career? Did you always want to become an actor?

Wasn’t an overnight decision, kept asking myself what I wanted to do in life, acting was the answer. Not since the start, but this bug came in me in my later teens.

Has your perception of the entertainment industry in Pakistan changed over time?

Whenever it’s about to change, something or the other, brings it back to square one, so no it has stayed the same.

What are your hobbies outside of acting?

Outside my work, I am just a very lazy person so don’t do much other than Netflix and chill. But lately I am up for any new experience.

Do you work out?

Not like I used to. I am now just trying to stay in shape. The beach body thing isn’t for our screens so have let that go.

People in Pakistan don’t consider singing or acting a ‘proper’ profession. What do you have to say about that?

True and that’s because it’s not a very out in the open kind of profession, people who aren’t a part of it, don’t have the wildest clue of how things are done and what’s the whole scenario like. So it’s okay on their part to feel like this.

How do you handle the fame that comes with being an actor? Does the hate or the pressure ever get to you?

I take it in a very humble way and by being immensely thankful, because it’s not something on demand, if it happens you are lucky and because people have accepted you. Pressure sometimes yes, hate haven’t gotten any, love from all over, always.

What’s your favourite part about your work?

The creation, the unknown parts of you, which you get to discover in the process and also how you think you did something bad and when it comes out people love that too, that’s amazing.

Tell us about your upcoming projects.

Three new to air sometime soon and two I am about to start shooting.

Name three things on your bucket list.

Don’t want to jinx them 🙂

Tell us about your first tv shoot. What was it like?

I had no clue on how it’s done, as I am not a trained actor, I just ended up in the middle of a shoot and was spellbound. Was very nervous initially but soon got the hang of it.

Who is your inspiration?

It’s no one in particular. The inspiration is the fight to achieve in life and not end up being a failure.

Describe your perfect day off when you’re not working.

Hahaha it’s me and my eternal love for my huge bed.

What advice do you have for aspiring actors?

Know the path, understand the industry, learn the process and choose and act wisely. Don’t just jump in to get thrown out, instead feel the waters and then keep slipping slowly to stay afloat.

IN CONVERSATION WITH Scheherzade Noor Peerzada

Tell us a little about your new webseries.

My new webseries, called ‘Khoj’, is by Pikchur Tv – A new streaming platform that is has an application where you make an account and watch the series, absolutely free! The director is Areeba Naveed, who I was very lucky to have gotten the chance to work with. In this crime-thriller, I play the role of a police sub-inspector, alongside the esteemed Samiya Mumtaz.

How did you decide to pursue acting/modelling as a career? Did you always want to become an actor?

I joke about how I knew I wanted to be an actress before I was born. It’s true! It’s something I’ve always known and never questioned. Modeling is something that kind of just happens to you if you’re in this industry.

What are your hobbies outside of modelling and acting?

I love hitting the gym and doing pilates and yoga. I enjoy spending time cooking for myself and my loved ones.

What is your beauty routine?

My ‘beauty routine’ isn’t limited to skincare. It involves something for the mind, body and soul – This may sound cheesy but I feel like if you take care of these three things, you feel pretty beautiful. I focus on a clean diet, as much as possible. I work out regularly, and take time out for myself in order to stay connected to myself and recharge my batteries. Haha. Spending time with people who encourage me to grow and learn is also pivotal. For me, this is my beauty routine!

Do you work out?

Yes. My day feels incomplete without some sort of movement.

Acting in Pakistan is still considered very taboo. Did you face problems when you decided to pursue this career?

None, whatsoever. I am incredibly blessed and lucky to have come from a family full of artists, who understand what it means to have a creative drive, along with the inherent need to bring this creativity to fruition.

How do you handle the fame that comes with being an actor? Does the hate or the pressure ever get to you?

Haha. I don’t think I’m there yet! I wouldn’t call it fame. But being in the public eye comes with its own tribulations. I have become more thick-skinned, and I feel it’s extremely important to have a close-knit circle of loved ones. This makes it easier to deal with any negativity your audience may direct towards you. It also allows you to get constructive feedback from people who really know you, so that you can also grow and learn if you are in the wrong. I’m lucky and blessed to have a great circle of loved ones who I can rely on.

What’s your favourite part about your work?

Being allowed to immerse myself into the reality of another human being.

Who is your favourite designer?

I love Rano’s Heirlooms. Always have. Growing up, I’d see Rano Khala’s designs and they always seemed so magical. Forever my favorite.

Name three things on your bucket list.

Acting in a leading role in a Hollywood Production, with a great script and crew. Times three.

Who is your inspiration?

My parents and my brother. Honest, driven and hardworking. So, so talented.

Describe your perfect day off when you’re not working.

Working out, spending time with loved ones, cooking and making coffee.

What advice would you give to young actresses?

Believe in yourself, even if others may not. Work on your craft. Polish it. Take constructive criticism. Don’t get lost in the superficial nature of this industry. Respect your coworkers, and your crew. Do not compromise on your values for momentary gains. What is meant for you will come, even if it takes time. Stay grounded, and don’t forget to take breaks and recharge.

How would you describe your personal style?

I would define my personal style as minimal, feminine and sophisticated.

Your favourite fashion designer?

Internationally there are many but to name a few, Max Mara, Self Portrait and Carolina Herrera. Locally, I adore Sania Maskatiya’s elegant & whimsical aesthetic.

Do you believe in sustainable fashion? Have you changed your wardrobe to make it more sustainable in the recent years?

I’ve certainly made very conscious purchases in the recent years and not only because of the inflationary pressure. As a mother, I feel it’s important to instill ethical fashion values in our children as their choices will have a huge impact on the environment in future as adults. Basic lessons like, choosing quality over quantity, encourage them to rewear, restyle and recycle outfits and pass down clothes to a family member when they don’t fit you – is a great approach to sustainability.

Where is Pakistan do you love to shop?

For western and particularly for my daughter, I like to shop at Outfitters and Ethnic. For eastern, my go-to brand is Suffuse.

What is the oldest item in your closet?

Shawls, which btw, are still in mint condition.

What, in your opinion, are must have items that are essential to a great closet?

A crisp white button-up shirt, a classic pair of denim, a versatile black blazer, sleek black trousers, beige/nude color heels and black stilettos. Also, I think one should invest in a good every-day accessory like a pair of gold/diamond stud earrings or a watch.

Your most prized possession?

Heirloom jewellery that has been passed down from my (maternal) grandmother.

Your favourite accessory?

One of my favourite fragrances depending on my mood and the occasion.

What item in your closet makes you cringe?

I don’t buy anything that I would regret later but I do have certain unused PR giveaways that I want to toss away.
